Backlinks are links that point to a webpage or website. So, any website, online directory, or any other type of link received by a web node. These backlinks are also called inbound links, inlinks, incoming links, etc.The amount of inbound links that your website has (other sites linking to you) is a significant factor to your webpage ranking. Search engines will take notice to your website much more if 1,000 other websites are linking to it.

There are 'link farms' out there which many people make the mistake of using. The way the 'link farms' work is you put a link to another website on your page, and they put a link on their page in return. It's okay to do this in moderation (for sites similar to yours or affiliates of yours) But, if you start to get out of hand and getting multitudes of links from random websites (and post just as many links on your site) you could very possibly get blacklisted by search engines.

So, how do you get backlinks? This is another difficult step in website optimization. First thing you want to do is just ask! Ask any of your business partners, friends, vendors, or just anyone that has a website to link to you. The next thing I recommend is to just create a quality website and people will link to you without even being asked. People love 'how-to' pages, tutorials and just anything interesting or ammusing.PPC (Pay Per Click) is another method of getting backlinks. Google Adwords offers this type of service. While this will help your site, the goal is to increase your search engine placement organically and free.
